If I had the time, I 'd try this, but for now I try to buy "acceptable" vodkas like Absolute on sale if I don't want to spend the $$$ for top of the line stuff.

I used to think cheap vodkas were fine as mixers, but too many horrific hangovers finally convinced me otherwise.

You have to admire their "scienticity" though!

I've done a monster version of this process (with charcoal bought from distilling supplies site) and it works - if you like your vodka to be completely clean and light. Definetely not for those who want a refined flavor characteristics. Best results with Trader Joe's vodka or the gods or albertson's $12/1.75L plastic jug.

I'll put up a separate post on the actual process.

Just to point this out - the home filtration process is nothing novel. My father told me this was very commonplace in the dormitories of Ukranian universities.

This sounds like an interesting business opportunity. You cannot see them but there can be many impurities in vodka. Namely, they are methanol (wood alcohol) and acetaldehyde. These things are sometimes called fusel oils. These things can be reduced if a true master distiller is in charge.

I know I've said it before but it must be dirt cheap in the States. Iceberg vodka is really good for the price. In Canada, it's about $21 CAN per bottle. All alcohol is cheaper down there, bless you guys, so it's probably not too expensive. Hell, I'm having some as I type.

I love it when I can't spend the coin on Belve or Grey Gooose.

the best cheap vodka ive ever had is definately "stockholm kristall" - www.stockholmkristall.com/
you can find it at trader joes for about $12 a bottle and for the price, its phanominal.
vodka of the gods isnt very good, i put it around the same quality of smirnoff and half the price, so i guess its a good deal if you use it as a mixer.

But that's just it, cheap vodka doesn't have to be rotgut head slammer moonshine. It just has to be inexpensive.

Case in point, Mernaya. I don't know if you'll be able to find it easily, doesn't seem many people know of it. It's a 40% Ukrainian grain vodka; it's a good balance between something a Russian would drink and super-overfiltered tasteless smoothy stuff most Americans prefer. I like most of them, the Silver (has honey in it) is $11.99 750ml at my corner (meaning overpriced) liquor store. If you get a chance to try it, or some of their other vodkas.
