Cachaça Gabriela is my name. Explaining: cachaça is the same of spirit, schnaps, eau de vie. That's a brazilian name for the spirit made from the sugar cane juice. Typical from Brazil.

But, I'm better than the cachaças I know you already know: I'm organic and artisan made.
That means that we follow the principles to being totally integrated with the environment. Plants are grown without any kind of chemical products giving the sugar cane full organic status. And the way I am produced is really similar to an art: we have to have patience and wait for my right time to drink: at least one year I rest at brazilian's wood barrels: jequitibá-rosa, amburana, bálsamo, amendoim.

I don't know if it's me or the formula is changing, but lately it's just gotten to taste kind of nasty - harsh and lots of afterbite. Saturday night, a friend took me out for a taste testing. I can't remember what I had or liked, but felt terrible the next day (I do remember having a very good time).

Any recommendations of what I should try? I think I just need to buy a bottle and give it a few pulls to see if I really like it, but I don't want to have a stockpile of vodka that I don't like.

Any recommendations would be really appreciated. I'd like to stay under $25 for a 750ml.
Cucumber infused vodka (great for shots, amazing vodka tonics and a killer martini)

I did a little side-by-side vodka tasting earlier in the week and the line up was: VOX, Shakers, Tori, 42 Below, and Effen. Unfortunately they only had Hangar One flavored so I decided to pass. My personal favorite was Effen, and my friends was Shakers (my least fav of the lot, though I do like the penguins!). Tied for 2nd place was Tori & Vox. Next week I'll match up Effen with a few others and see how it fares.

Good times!

Finally, some uses for Smirnoff!

1. To remove a bandage painlessly, saturate the bandage with vodka. The solvent dissolves the adhesive.

2. To clean the caulking around bathtubs and showers, fill a trigger-spray bottle with vodka, spray the caulking, let set five minutes and wash clean. The alcohol in the vodka kills mold and mildew.

3. To clean your eyeglasses, simply wipe the lenses with a soft, clean cloth dampened with vodka. The alcohol in the vodka cleans the glass and kills germs.

4. Prolong the life of razors by filling a cup with vodka and letting your safety razor blade soak in the alcohol after shaving. The vodka disinfects the blade and prevents rusting.

5. Spray vodka on vomit stains, scrub with a brush, then blot dry.

6. Using a cotton ball, apply vodka to your face as an astringent to cleanse the skin and tighten pores.

7. Add a jigger of vodka to a 12-ounce bottle of shampoo. The alcohol cleanses the scalp, removes toxins from hair, and stimulates the growth of healthy hair.

8. Fill a sixteen-ounce trigger-spray bottle with vodka and spray bees or wasps to kill them.

9. Pour one-half cup vodka and one-half cup water in a Zip Lock freezer bag, and freeze for a slushy, re-freezable ice pack for aches, pain, or black eyes..

10. Fill a clean, used mayonnaise jar with freshly packed lavender flowers, fill the jar with vodka, seal the lid tightly and set in the sun for three days. Strain liquid through a coffee filter, then apply the tincture to aches and pains.

11. Make your own mouthwash by mixing nine tablespoons powered cinnamon with one cup vodka. Seal in an airtight container for two weeks. Strain through a coffee filter. Mix with warm water and rinse your mouth. Don't swallow.

12. Using a q-tip, apply vodka to a cold sore to help it dry out.

13. If a blister opens, pour vodka over the raw skin as a local anesthetic that also disinfects the exposed dermis.

14. To treat dandruff, mix one cup vodka with two teaspoons crushed rosemary, let sit for two days, strain through a coffee filter and massage into your scalp and let dry.

15. To treat an earache put a few drops of vodka in your ear. Let set for a few minutes. Then drain. The vodka will kill the bacteria that is causing pain in your ear.

16. To relieve a fever, use a washcloth to rub vodka on your chest and back as a liniment.

17. To cure foot odor, wash your feet with vodka.

18. Vodka will disinfect and alleviate a jellyfish sting.

19. To remove cigarette smoke in your home or office mix one part vodka and three parts water and spray the clothing, then launder and let dry.

20. Pour vodka over an area affected with poison ivy to remove the urushiol oil from your skin.

21. Swish a shot of vodka over an aching tooth. Allow your gums to absorb some of the alcohol to numb the pain.

Maybe I just had a few bad experiences, but yeah. Just wondering if I'm the odd one out on this.

We just started carrying this vodka where I work, so of course they all had to be sampled...they are very good if you like flavored vodkas. They make several flavors: Meyer Lemon, Key Lime, Ruby Red Grapefruit, and my personal favorite - Blood Orange. They don't have that sometimes-sickening sugary taste like other flavored vodkas because they're made with real fruit. Unfortunately it's not very widely distributed (it's only sold by the bottle at two places here in Nevada - but fortunately I live right down the street from one of them) but if you ever see it, you should give it a try!

they UV line of vodkas were all originally flavored, so i didnt have much interest, however this year they have decided to release a regular vodka. it won gold in the san fransisco spirits show.
i havent had a chance to try it yet, but i am looking forward to it. its description is that of a high quality vodka, up there with level, and kettle one, but at absolute and stoli prices.

just thought i would mention a few other vodkas out there i havent read about in this tribe so far.

absolute came out with a new top shelf vodka called "level" its not that bad, on par with kettle, but not quite as good as belv.

stoli also has come out with its one top shelf version. i forget its name though, its stoli something. like stoli supreme or something.... whatever. i havent tried it yet.

turi is a good one i havent heard mentioned yet.

the van gogh line has great flavored vodkas (they also have a line of high quality liqours, such as amsterdamn chocolate)

umm... theres a few more, but i cant remember thier names. so ill end it with those.

As for Com Bloc, Polish potato vodkas can be quit nice straight up or with a twist of lemon peel.

does anyone know of a source in the US that sells 18 year old starka? the only place i found carries only the most expensive 30 year old, $375/bottle....

if you've never had starka, imagine the best of an oak aged scotch combined with the best of rye based vodka.

starka means "old", sort of, really it's a term used to address a wife of many years, for example my father will say: "starka, what's for dinner"? kind of like "your old lady" is used in US english slang.

anyway, the story goes that when a daughter is born, the father buries vodka in an oaken barrel and on the day of his daughter's wedding, the barrel is unearthed and promptly drank by the guests to honor the marriage.

it's the most superb liquor i've ever tasted.

my mother is bringing several bottles from poland when she visits later this year, but a north american source would sure be a great find.
